On December 13, the first meeting initiated by “Gyumri without makeshift shelters” Foundation took place. Representatives of the Foundation had met with the personal of Medical Center of Gyumri. Director of the Medical Center Armen Isahakyan in his speech stressed the importance of participation of the Medical Center in implementation of Foundation's mission. “The Medical Center of Gyumri, one of the largest structures in the region, employing about 400 people and it cannot remain indifferent to this problem, ” he said.
The executive director of the Foundation Gharib Harutyunyan presented the activities of the Foundation and it's results in 2017. “We attach importance to “One organization - one apartment” initiative, according which any organization can buy one apartment for one family living in the makeshift shelter. We already have such examples. We hope that such initiatives will have an impact not only in Armenia, but also in the Diaspora. If each organization, having joined this initiative, dedicates one apartment to one family living in the makeshift shelter, then by approximate calculations we will be able to solve this problem in the 30th anniversary of the Spitak earthquake,” he said.
The executive director of the Foundation stressed: “In connection with the 30th anniversary, we announce our intention to clean Gyumri from as many makeshift shelters as it possible”.
Karen Petrosyan, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, stressed that over the past 29 years the issue of makeshift shelters has been used by many forces because of their political, economic and personal goals. “The number of makeshift shelters was several times larger than the number of destroyed shelters. Over the past year, 107 shelters were destroyed, 27 families get apartments. Meanwhile, in the past, more houses were received, fewer houses were destroyed. No one can return to makeshift shelter, and the shelter of family, which get an apartment, will be destroyed. Our goal is to clean the city from the makeshift shelters, ” Petrosyan said, adding: “We are here because it is much easier to talk about values and responsibilities in this environment than, for example, in the business environment. There are 12 families within your cоlleаgues living in the makeshift shelters. You can support them to purchase an apartment”.
The speeches of the speakers were followed by numerous questions of participants. The initiatives of Foundation in consolidation around makeshift shelter's problem in Gyumri were highly appreciated by participants. The staff of Gyumri Medical Center was interested in the number of makeshift shelters, their conditions.
