About “Gyumri without makeshift shelters” foundation
Since the earthquake of December 7 of 1988 have passed more than 28 years, but 96 shelter districts still exist in Gyumri. The majority of those temporary shelters are no longer fit for living. In December 2015, "Gyumri without houses" Foundation was established, whose main purpose is the improvement of the living conditions of those living in temporary makeshift shelters in Gyumri and exemption of Gyumri from shelters. The Foundation's Board of Trustees consists of 21 members - famous people from Gyumri who are experienced in and represent different fields. Chairman of the Board of Trustees is Michael bishop Ajapahian, leader of Shirak Diocese of the Armenian National Church. Director of the foundation is Gharib Harutyunyan. Three committees were formed within Foundation's Board - monitoring, public relations, fundraising and financial management and activities are being held to free Gyumri from the shelters.
Foundation's mission is to contribute to the improvement of living conditions of those living in temporary makeshift shelters in Gyumri, remove temporary shelters from Gyumri increasing public awareness and activism, using alternative strategies for solving this housing problem involving and consolidating the potential of Armenia and the Diaspora, also of other interested persons and organizations.
By the donations collected during this time 27 beneficiary families received apartments. This works continue. The Foundation carries out monitoring the 96 shelter-districts in Gyumri already having necessary lists provided by the Gyumri Municipality. The Foundation has a selected target district 234 located in the area of «Friendship Park» in Gyumri, which is a green zone. The Foundation has a priority that is to provide housing to those living in temporary shelters and dismantle those shelters and clear the area for the park.
A number of volunteers have joined the Foundation, who donated their investments in the implementation of its mission.
Our vision is - Gyumri is a city without houses.
Slogan of 2017 is ''from shelter to house is a single step of each of us''.
