During the Soviet period the city that was already renamed Leninakan was a famous industrial center. After the establishment of Soviet rule diversified industry was established in Gyumri (textile, machinery, building materials, food, shoes, clothing, wood, glass, etc.). The city was a center of transportation. It was one of the major railway hubs in Transcaucasia. Gyumri railroad had an important role for the Soviet Union, that's why when Lenin passed Gyumri and its adjacent territories to Turkey, then changed his mind and took Gyumri back. In 1977, there were 25 medical institutions in the city, including 8 hospitals, 1 maternity home, and 5 specialized dispensaries. Leninakan was also a resort town. In 1980, there were children's health center, a hostel profilaktoriume and 5pioneer camps here.
Since 2013, all hospitals of Gyumri are concentrated in one building. There are the maternity hospital, Berlin and Austrian hospitals and some clinics here.
